Broadside Electric
This outstanding Philadelphia-based quartet takes traditional
balladry and tunes and turns them on their ear in a style that
resembles early Fairport Convention. It is very fitting that
they're the first folk group to send us a CD-ROM. It is also a
very fitting end to a fine summer schedule. |
July 1999 |
25-Jul-1999 |
Mustard's Retreat
At the end of summertime's big festival weekend, Bound for Glory
welcomes back one of our favorite duos, the totally charming
Mustard's Retreat. Mustard's Retreat is full of oddball stories,
delightful tunes, and odd perspectives on life. We are pleased
and excited to have them back on the show. |
|
18-Jul-1999 |
Eric Garrison
Eric makes his second Bound for Glory appearance. He's a
singer-songwriter who is also a storyteller. He creates very
real characters and situations in his songs, and he's a
delightful performer as well. Please welcome him back. |
|
11-Jul-1999 |
Saul Broudy
We've been trying to get together with Saul Broudy for a Bound
for Glory show for twenty years or so. Saul is from the ornery
side of American folk music. You can hear echoes of Woody
Guthrie and Utah Phillips in his music, but you can also hear
Johnny Cash and Fats Domino!! An eclectic evening from someone
who knows a strong song when he hears one. |
|
04-Jul-1999 |
Don Conoscenti
Don Conoscenti is the perfect person to appear on Bound for Glory
on the fourth of July. You'll understand that when you hear him.
He is definitely included in the short list of the best
contemporary acoustic singer-songwriters. Another first
appearance on Bound for Glory. |
June 1999 |
27-Jun-1999 |
David Olney
David Olney is a very powerful personality,
writing songs that tell intense stories. His songs show his folk
roots, but his topics vary from historical to very contemporary.
With seven albums out on Rounder, he is nationally known, and
very much worth a visit or a listen. A Bound for Glory debut. |

The Diamondback Rattlers
We end our season as we began it, with Bluegrass.
It's been years since we last had the Diamondback Rattlers on
Bound For Glory. The Diamondbacks are a traditional bluegrass
band with a lot of style and energy. They'll put a smile on
everyone's face on Springtime's last show. |
|
02-May-1999 |
Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen
Welcome back these Bound for Glory favorites.
Cindy's orientation is traditional folk, Steve is a marvelous
songwriter. Their music flows together in a way that few can
match. It's an honor to have them back on Bound for Glory. |
April 1999 |
25-April-1999 |
Grit Laskin
Mainstay of the Toronto folk scene, and guitar builder extraordinaire,
Grit Laskin is one of a kind. His songs vary from traditional ballads
to wild parodies to serious political messages.
A Bound for Glory debut not to be missed. |
|
18-April-1999 |
Peter Keane
Been trying to get this show to happen for several years now.
Peter Keane is a wonderful finger-style guitarist, in a ragtime
and bluesy vein, who takes this part of the folk tradition into the
contemporary world in an exciting and colorful way.
A lovely show. |
|
11-April-1999 |
David Hamburger
Welcome back David Hamburger, the King of the Brooklyn Delta,
master of the slide guitar and the dobro, jivey, bluesy, off the wall.
What a treat to have him back on the show. David Hamburger,
good time music man. |
|
04-April-1999 |
Darryl Porpoise
Darryl Purpose is a storyteller who puts his stories into songs.
He's one of the more unusual of the contemporary singer-songwriters,
with a quirky take on life that makes his music a lot of fun.
A fine Easter weekend on Bound for Glory. |

|
14-March-1999 |
Tanglefoot
Tanglefoot is a five man band from way up North in Owen
Sound, Ontario. Their powerful songs respect the folk
tradition and reflect the Canadian experience. Everywhere
they go, they are a knockout. Be sure not to miss them on
Bound for Glory. |
|
07-March-1999 |
Jack Hardy
Jack Hardy, he of the incredibly dry sense of humor, brings
his delightful, quirky, funny, powerful songs back to Bound
for Glory after a several year absence. Jack Hardy, patriarch
of the New York City singer-songwriter scene, brings much
wisdom to his music. We're excited to have him back. |
February 1999 |
28-February-1999 |
Garrison Creek
Garrison Creek is a young Toronto-based band that plays
traditional Canadian tunes for dancing and singing, with an
outrageous percussion player who will knock your socks off.
You've never heard traditional tunes that sound like this. |
|
21-February-1999 |
Mac Benford, Walt Koken, Bob Potts
Old time music heaven. This is where the old timey revival
started, and if you want to tap your toes to traditional
American mountain music, you won't do better than to catch
this show. These guys are the best, and they're all
together on the same show at the same time. |
|
14-February-1999 |
Sadie Greensales Ragtime Jug Band
The name says it all. Timothy Walker and David Driskell
play the old jug band tunes as if they're brand new. David
plays a whole trunkload of instruments, including the entire
hardware orchestra, and, memorably, two clarinets at once.
Whew. As lively as it gets. |
|
07-February-1999 |
The Dady Brothers
It's been way too many years. John and Joe Dady are
folksingers in the best sense of the word, with a repertoire
that's heavy on Irish tunes. They're talented
multi-instrumentalists, and remarkable, outgoing performers.
And they're celebrating a new album, too. A great way to
spend a winter evening. |
January 1999 |
31-January-1999 |
Michael Jerling
Welcome back this outstanding bluesy songwriter. Michael has
a wry view of the human condition. He's got so many albums
to his credit that he has just issued a retrospective,
"Early Jerling". Plus, the infamous Tony Markelis should be
along on bass. Not to be missed. |
|
24-January-1999 |
Cornerstone
Welcome the current incarnation of Cornerstone,
Central New York's incredibly creative bluegrass band.
Dee Specker is the lead vocalist, and she'll take you
through everything from bluegrass standards to jazz to swing,
to places that you didn't expect to go.
What a fine way to start Bound for Glory live in 1999. |

Watkins and the Rapiers
You've never heard anything like them. An irreverent, eclectic
mix of acoustic music that's full of twists and surprises. Sort
of like a modern day jugband, filtered through the 1990's,
featuring accordian, bass, drums, guitar, harmonica, kazoo,
mandolin, violin, washboard. Plus there's their Christmas
repertoire. |

22-November-1998 |
George Wilson and Kitchen Ceili
It's been a great long time since George Wilson graced the Bound
for Glory stage. He'll be bringing some good friends, and
playing some very danceable music. Perhaps he'll sit still long
enough to grace us with an Uncle Dave Macon song or two. Gonna
be a lot of fun. |
|
15-November-1998 |
Rod MacDonald
Rod MacDonald has appeared on Bound for Glory a number of times
over the decades, and is always worth the trip. Rod definitely
has a political agenda, deftly presented with great good humor.
He is a superb songwriter, and a wonderfully laid back performer.
This show will be one of the high points. |
|
08-November-1998 |
Small Potatoes
This will be the third Bound for Glory appearance for this
incredibly eclectic duo from Illinois. They play their
instruments and sing with great style. Their harmonies are
incredible. And the songs? Well, it's almost impossible to
categorize Small Potatoes. But it sure works. They're very
welcome back. |
|
01-November-1998 |
Curtis and Loretta
Curtis and Loretta come to Bound for Glory from the Twin Cities.
They are modern-day folksingers, choosing their songs with care,
from all over, with a bit of a country edge to their music. They
are completely unknown in these parts. Well, almost completely.
Trust us. |
October 1998 |
25-October-1998 |
Ellis Paul
Ellis Paul is one of the best known of America's contemporary
acoustic singer-songwriters. Why, he even has caught the
attention of MTV (!) Ellis remains a wonderful writer and
performer, and it is a great treat to welcome him for the first
time to WVBR's Bound for Glory. Be there. |
|
18-October-1998 |
The Kennedys
Pete and Maura Kennedy return to Bound for Glory for
another high intensity contemporary folk evening. Both of the
Kennedys are superb, highly creative guitarists. Their sound
inevitably reminds listeners of the chiming guitars of the Byrds,
several eons back, but the songs and the humor are all their own.
A super show. |
|
11-October-1998 |
Albums from the Studio
Cornell is on break, so tune in to WVBR-FM/93.5,
and give Phil a call at 607-273-2121. |
|
04-October-1998 |
Magpie
It's been several years. Please welcome back this
outstanding folk duo from D.C.
Greg Artzner and Terry Leonino are two of the closest
harmony singers in the country. Their songs range from
traditional political and labor songs, to old pop tunes
from the 20's, to new homemade songs that are often gems.
A very exciting, high energy Bound for Glory. |
September 1998 |
27-September-1998 |
Pierce Campbell
It has been over twenty years since Pierce Campbell
last appeared on WVBR's Bound for Glory.
He's become a hot finger-style guitarist and fine songwriter,
with several albums to his credit, and a delightful, wry sense
of humor. We've been trying to get this show together for quite
a while now. Come visit. |
|
20-September-1998 |
Four Shillings Short
Welcome back this ecclectic Celtic act from Ireland and San Francisco.
Four Shillings Short plays music on a great many traditional
Celtic instruments, including the Celtic sitar (!).
They're a lot of fun, with stories as well as songs to share. |
|
13-September-1998 |
Sandy & Caroline Paton w/ Rick Fielding
Traditional folk heaven. Sandy and Caroline are the founders
of Folk Legacy Records, and among America's most important
preservers of the folk tradition. About once a decade they do
Bound for Glory. Rick Fielding is a traditionally
oriented Canadian songwriter, with an outstanding album on,
yes, Folk Legacy Records. Come join in the choruses. |
|
06-September-1998 |
Lisa Moscatiello
Some of you know Lisa Moscatiello as the fantastic singer who led
the late, lamented band "The New Saint George".
Her mix of her own songs with ancient British ballads will be both
beautiful and moving. Lisa Moscatiello is a knockout.
Please welcome her to Bound for Glory for the first time. |
August 1998 |
30-August-1998 |
Y'ALL
What a start to Bound for Glory's 32nd year!
Old Time Country Music for the 21st Century.
Y'ALL puts a twist on the Old Time "Brothers' Act"
that you aren't likely to forget. Incredibly funny.
Their second Bound for Glory is their last one before
they move on to Nashville this fall. |
