Mustard's Retreat
Last summer, Mustard's Retreat did such a fine Bound for Glory
show that, last fall, they were awarded the first annual Best of
Bound for Glory award, by members of the Friends of Bound for
Glory. We welcome back one of our favorite duos. Mustard's
Retreat is full of unusual stories, delightful tunes, and odd
perspectives on life. It's Living Room Music writ large, and
they're really something special. |
|
23-Jul-2000 |
Amy Fradon
Some of you remember Amy Fradon. She's appeared on Bound for
Glory twice before as part of the goundbreaking duo "Amy and
Leslie". Amy's gone solo, and has a wonderful new album. Well,
not quite solo... On Bound for Glory she will be part of a five
piece band. A great treat. |
|
16-Jul-2000 |
Alien Folklife
This is "take 2" for the Aliens, felled this spring by a very bad
cold. What a great name!! Alien Folklife is a gentle and
sometimes irreverent duo of Paul Mercer and Joan Kosby. Paul,
originally from Newfoundland, is best know as the writer of the
song "Johnny Burke", which has made the rounds of the folk world. |
|
09-Jul-2000 |
David Olney
David Olney is a very powerful personality, writing songs that
tell intense stories. His songs show his folk roots, but his
topics vary from historical to very contemporary. He has just
released his eighth album, and is going strong. He joined us
last summer, and we're delighted to have him back. |
|
02-Jul-2000 |
Michael Johnathon
It'll be the second time around for Michael Johnathon,
traditionally-oriented folk singer and songwriter and, yes, host
of the nationally syndicated folk broadcast, the WoodSongs
Old-Time Radio Hour. Michael is a really interesting guy,
You'll enjoy him a lot. |
June 2000 |
25-June-2000 |
Erica Wheeler
We start our season well, with Erica Wheeler, outstanding
singer-songwriter. Erica's songs tell stories, stories that feel
real. It's been several years since she last appeared on Bound
for Glory, and we'll be delighted to welcome her back.

Bob Halperin
Oh this guy is a lot of fun. Bob Halperin plays the good time
blues. Acoustic blues and a bit of ragtime from a great guitar
picker and a delightful performer. Bob Halperin plays a bunch of
tunes from the early part of the last century, tunes we don't
usually hear any more. A great ending to a fine Spring. |
April 2000 |
30-Apr-2000 |
Ellis Paul
It'll be the second time around for Ellis Paul, well-known
contemporary acoustic singer-songwriter and charismatic
performer. Ellis Paul has an uncanny ability to pull the live
Bound for Glory audience into his musical world. There are few
better, and we're honored to have him back. |
|
23-Apr-2000 |
Curtis and Loretta
Welcome back this outstanding, traditionally oriented folk duo
from Minnesota. Their gorgeous harmonies and lovely
accompaniments on many instruments, including Celtic harp, craft
a wonderful evening. Their homemade songs are excellent, and fit
well with their traditional leanings. |
|
16-Apr-2000 |
Les Sampou
Here's a strong woman, a bluesy singer and songwriter, a powerful
performer. Les Sampou has made quite an impression on the
national folk scene, and we are very pleased to host her Bound
for Glory debut. She will grab your attention. |
|
09-Apr-2000 |
Alien Folklife
What's in a name? Alien Folklife is a gentle folk duo, Paul
Mercer and Joan Kosby, performing both serious material and wry,
good humored takes on 21st century America. Paul Mercer is best
known as the writer of "Johnny Burke". This will be their second
Bound for Glory visit. |
|
02-Apr-2000 |
Lenahan
Bound for Glory rocks out, Celtic style, with Lenahan.
The music is mostly Irish traditional, but the performance is
rockin'. This is an exciting, dynamic group, not to be missed.
Welcome back Lenahan, on their second visit to Bound for Glory. |

|
12-Mar-2000 |
Stephan Smith
Stephan Smith is a young singer and songwriter who is obviously
heavily influenced by one of the best of the old timers, Woody
Guthrie himself. Stephan's songs have the simplicity, directness
and topical immediacy that many of us remember from Woody in his
prime. But he's no Woody Guthrie clone. His songs are his own
in his own time. |
|
05-Mar-2000 |
Mark Erelli
Mark Erelli is a contemporary acoustic singer-songwriter in the
best sense of the phrase. His songs are always interesting, full
of good storytelling and the occasional surprising twist. It's
great to present a new songwriter whose songs are worth
remembering. |
February 2000 |
27-Feb-2000 |
Mary Gauthier
Mary pronounces her name Go-SHAY. Her country-flavored songs,
and her Louisiana background, bring her deeply into your
consciousness. Here's a woman who tells a lot of truth. We're
very much looking forward to having her on Bound for Glory. |
|
20-Feb-2000 |
Hot Soup!
This delightful women's trio from Maryland brings some excellent
new songs to Bound for Glory, and a superb interplay between the
musicians that will not be forgotten soon. This is a magical
Bound for Glory debut from a fast rising folk group that all will
enjoy. |
|
13-Feb-2000 |
Artisan
Artisan is an a cappella trio from Britain. Right there we have
a couple of departures from the usual for Bound for Glory.
Artisan's songs are incredibly well written, with dense,
overlapping parts and harmonies that will make your jaw drop, and
a wonderful stage presence. An unusual show that no one should
miss. |
|
The 1000th Live Bound For Glory Performance
With a lot of help from Paul Speicher, we have done the best job
we can at figuring out who has appeared on Bound for Glory during
the last 33 years. It is most likely that the 1000th live show
is February 6, 2000. |
|
06-Feb-2000 |
Small Potatoes
Small Potatoes is a wonderful duo from Illinois, making a return
visit to Bound for Glory, and by chance they are our 1000th live
performer. This duo is highly eclectic. They are modern day
folksingers, choosing the best music they have run across, and
presenting it with great energy and musicianship. What a
treat!!! |
January 2000 |
30-Jan-2000 |
Whirligig
Wow. When someone makes a short list of America's best
neo-celtic bands, Whirligig is always near the top. Whirligig
makes wonderful twists on tradition. Lead vocalist is Lisa
Moscatiello, who has done Bound for Glory solo. Greg Anderson of
the band has also appeared on Bound for Glory before.
Save the date. |
|
23-Jan-2000 |
Bill Staines
We start the year 2000 with Bill Staines, probably the most
beloved of the Bound for Glory performers over the decades. With
his magnificently simple songs, and his ability to draw everyone
into a close singing circle, Bill is a national treasure. We are
honored to have him back on the show. |

James Keelaghan
We finish our fall season with one of Canada's finest, powerful
prairie singer and songwriter James Keelaghan. He's a strong
performer, with a big voice, who writes clear, simple songs that
are definitely worth keeping. What a pleasure! |

21-Nov-1999 |
Mike Agranoff
Mike returns to Bound for Glory with more zaniness. He writes
amazing recitations that have brought him quite a bit of
notoriety, but he'll also sing a wide variety of folk music from
an ancient ballad to a contemporary parody. |
|
14-Nov-1999 |
Lui Collins and Dana Robinson
Alas, this may be the last ever performance for this delightful
duo, both of whom have appeared on Bound for Glory separately.
Both Lui and Dana are remarkable songwriters, with Dana, in
particular, well immersed in the folk tradition. A special
evening. |
|
07-Nov-1999 |
James Gordon
Many will remember James Gordon as the lead musician in Tamarack.
Now he's out on his own, with a new bunch of "Canadian Routes"
Music in his inimitable style. James is a fine writer and
performer who tells Canadian stories that we Americans can
understand perfectly. A real treat. |
October 1999 |
31-Oct-1999 |
Delaney Brothers Bluegrass
Bound for Glory is pleased to welcome one of the finest bluegrass
bands in New York State. The Delaney Brothers have been playing
bluegrass for decades, and they really know how. Fiddle and banjo,
guitar, mandolin, and bass. Bluegrass the way it ought to be. |
|
24-Oct-1999 |
Metropolitan Klezmer
We've been wanting to do a Klezmer band on Bound for Glory for
some time, and it's finally worked out. This six piece band from
New York City will bring us some exciting tunes, both lively and
sad, from the ghettos of Eastern Europe, as modified in New York
City by the Jazz Age. |
|
17-Oct-1999 |
The Westerleys
The Westerleys come from California via Nashville. They are what
country music could be if it would only dare. Good songs, and
intense, driving instrumentals made even better, for this show,
with the addition of Ithaca's own Dee Specker. |
|
10-Oct-1999 |
Albums from the Studio
Cornell is on break, so tune in to WVBR-FM/93.5,
and give Phil a call at 607-273-2121. |
|
03-Oct-1999 |
Garnet Rogers
Garnet Rogers is on the short list of Bound for Glory
favorites. The man from Ontario with the intense, full
voice, and songs that will break your heart, is a consummate
performer who will grab and hold your attention and your
memories. Don't miss this show. |
September 1999 |
26-Sep-1999 |
The Sillanpaa Family
Bound for Glory breaks out of its mold with this old time
country family band from...Finland. Singing in both Finnish
and English, this trio is full of energy, three part fiddle
harmonies, and good times. They've appeared in Ithaca a
number of times, but never before on Bound for Glory. |
|
19-Sep-1999 |
The Kennedys
If you list what's happening, and what's exciting, in the
world of contemporary acoustic singer-songwriters, the
Kennedys will be at the top of your list. Pete and Maura
Kennedy have delighted Bound for Glory audiences twice
before, with their songs, stories, and guitar wizardry.
Welcome them back. |
|
12-Sep-1999 |
Eddy Lawrence
Eddy Lawrence comes down from the north country with a wry
good humor and mighty hot flatpicking. Nobody else has a
similar view of the world, but we're glad Eddy does. One of
the most requested performers ever to do Bound for Glory. |
|
05-Sep-1999 |
Four Shillings Short
One's from Ireland, one's from California. Their music is a
delight, their performance style unexpected, and their
instrumentation is a kick. Only Four Shillings Short will
play a set of jigs or reels with sitar accompaniment. Music
from Ireland, Scotland, and America. Their third Bound for
Glory visit. |
August 1999 |
29-Aug-1999 |
Hog-Tie Sessions
We start the 33rd year of Bound for Glory live with a first
time appearance from one of the most creative string bands
the Ithaca area has seen in recent years. The Hog-Tie
Sessions play Celtic dance tunes and American traditional
songs and a bunch of other lively music that you'll just
have to hear. |
