Lui Collins and Dana Robinson in Concert
Radiant singer-songwriter Lui Collins joins cool multi-instrumentalist Dana Robinson for Cornell Folk Song Club's second concert of the fall season. Both are primarily solo artists, but together they bring a harmonious blend of sound and songs, as haunting alto meets reedy tenor. They have much in common: rural imagery, lyrical storytelling, and a talent for fusing the traditional with the innovatative to make passionate, contemporary music. But there are differences as well. Lui draws much inspiration from jazz and world music, as well as from New England folk traditions and contra dance melody; Dana draws upon southern Appalachian fiddle music and English fingerstyle guitar work. By combining his percussive rhythms to her fluid, powerful voice, and then playing on each other's strengths, they create something quite unique. Musical friends for some time, Lui and Dana produced a duo CD this summer. Enthusiastically received, Paired Down contains some of their favorite collaborative songs. Its success inspired them to hit the concert tour together. Co-sponsored by the Cornell Folk Song Club and Acoustic Ithaca, Lui Collins and Dana Robinson will be performing in what is now our usual place on the Arts Quad, 165 McGraw Hall.
