It's the time of year to celebrate the return of old friends Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen from Vermont (by way of Chicago, Texas, California). They are long-time travelers: consummate musicians, understated yet rich with experience and depth.

Their voices, solo or woven together, and sensitive, skilled instrumentation (guitars, concertina, banjo, mountain dulcimer, and fiddle) bring out the soul of each piece, haunting, silly, or wise. Theirs is a wedding of kindred spirits, distinctly individual yet comfortable together and with their audience. With love and integrity, they perform well-crafted original songs, first-rate contemporary work, and treasures unearthed from traditional sources: British, French, Scandinavian, Appalachian, old New England. They move seamlessly from ghostly Child ballads to Texas swing to Aboriginal dreamtime to snowbound Vermont to nonsense ditties to sweet love songs old and new. Their songs are the best of stories, memorable and fresh with each hearing.

Singly, as a duo, and with others (including Anne Hills, Priscilla Herdman, Michael Smith, Pete Sutherland, Mark Graham), they have produced many fine recordings (garnering many "top 10 Folk" accolades). But nothing beats their live performances.

Like the fall flights of geese, Snow and Canada, visits from Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen always quicken the heart. What a way to open the Cornell Folk Song Club's fall season!

Tickets are available at Ithaca Guitar Works, Colophon Books (formerly Borealis Bookstore), Greenstar Co-op, Small World Music, and, if any are left, at the door. You may also order tickets online and by mail: SASE to CFSC, PO Box 481, Ithaca, NY 14851.
