Rootabaga Boogie Productions brings The Red Stick Ramblers and their danceable mix of Cajun fiddle tunes, western swing, and traditional jazz of the '20s and '30s from southern Lousiana to upstate New York for two special shows in late February.

One of the hottest young roots bands in the country, The Red Stick Ramblers have played major venues and festivals (Merlefest, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage, Rhythm & Roots, Festival International) since they started out four years ago in Baton Rouge. The Ramblers build upon the songs of seminal fiddlers like Dennis McGee and Dewey Balfa, along with jazz and country swing bandleaders such as Bob Wills and Django Reinhardt, finding a common thread of danceable rhythms and strong, elegant melodies.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune writes, "Something about these young men playing songs from decades ago made the kids want to get up and dance--made Cajun hip again. It's the new old thing, and the kids dig it." Beausoleil's Michael Doucet said, "From Cajun to western swing to 'Hot Club' jazz, the Red Stick Ramblers bring us a refreshing new chapter in Louisiana music!"

Fiddler Kevin Wimmer, one of the founders of Balfa Toujours (along with Dewey Balfa's daughter Christine and her husband Dirk Powell) joins the Ramblers for this road trip; the Red Stick boys are on their way to showcase at Folk Alliance in Montreal.

The Red Stick Ramblers will play two very different gigs in the Ithaca area. On Tuesday, February 22, at 8pm they will showcase much of their original material at the Chapter House. The following night, February 23, the band hosts an all-ages dinner dance emphasizing the Cajun side of things at Perry City Friends Meeting House, halfway between Ithaca and Trumansburg. For dinner, the band's making the gumbo with andouille imported straight from Eunice; advance tickets are a MUST for the dance night, with a limited number of tickets available at Small World Records in Ithaca and T-burg Records in Trumansburg.
