At the heart of local harvest time, bring your favorite dish to share (6:30 pm) and sit at the full tables with KITCHEN CHAIR, the delectable and perfectly balanced duo of Gail Blake and Jennifer Dotson. After the potluck feast, there will be a teaching session at 7:45, followed by a celebratory contra dance from 8:00 to 11:00 pm, with Nancy Spero's spirited calling. What are we celebrating? The rich community of dancers, musicians, and farmers. In appreciation, members of Hands Four Dancers of Ithaca will be admitted FREE to this dance. This benefit is also available to those who join HFDI at the dance. In addition, we welcome new and returning students with a discounted admission of $5.
Every dance with Kitchen Chair is a special event. Gail Blake (on guitar) and Jennifer Dotson (on fiddle) are perfectly attuned, which allows them full play for their inventive, original arrangements of traditional and new dance tunes. You'll hear old chestnuts in a new way, but with delivered with full respect and rock-solid musicianship--no gimmicks. Their range is broad: Celtic, French Canadian, Scandinavian, and American contra dance music, and particularly luscious waltzes. The tempos are spot-on: lilting, punctuated, dramatic, or playful, as appropriate to each particular dance. Nancy Spero is a veteran caller who has worked often with Kitchen Chair. Their familiarity has built a strong rapport, which dancers will appreciate. Nancy is known for encouraging new dancers, and has made a great local contribution in organizing old-timey, square, and family dances.
Beginners are encouraged to come; you do not need to bring a partner. There will be a newcomers' workshop at 7:45 pm to show the basic steps and patterns. Throughout the evening, all dances will be taught. Please bring clean, soft-soled shoes to protect the floor.
